Paired Columns, One Failed: Replace One, Both or Neither

When one column of a matched Sub-Zero pair fails, there are three ways forward: repair it, replace it alone, or replace both so the pair still matches.

Two columns are two appliances that happen to stand side by side

A refrigerator column beside a freezer column, or two of either, are separate units. Each has its own refrigeration system and its own control, and each can be diagnosed and repaired without touching the other.

So when one stops cooling, the fault belongs to that column alone. It does not show that the neighbor is failing, and it does not prove it healthy either. The two were usually fitted together and have run the same years in the same room, which is a reason to look at the second one, not a forecast about it.

There are three answers here, not two

  • Repair the failed column. The pair stays exactly as it is and the kitchen is untouched.
  • Replace the failed column only. One new unit goes into one opening while the other column carries on.
  • Replace both. The pair is renewed together and the panels are made as a set.

The first and third are easy to picture. The middle option is where the surprises sit, because it asks a new unit to stand beside an older one for years, sharing trim and a line of sight.

Column one

If you repair

The work

Diagnose the failed column, repair its sealed system or whichever part has gone, and bring it back to temperature with the pair left exactly as it was.

What it comes to

$1,460–$3,380 plateau range for compressor or sealed-system repair

The $89 visit is credited against it once you say yes.

Still unknown

How the second column fares in the years ahead, and whether it asks for a large repair of its own at an awkward moment.

This column wins when

The failed column's cabinet and doors are sound, the healthy column is in good order, and the panels and trim are ones you want to keep.

Column two

If you replace

The work

Decide first whether one column or the pair is being ordered, because a pair is made and panelled as a set while a single unit is matched to a front that has aged.

What it comes to

$11,550–$20,400 reference figure on the plateau for a comparable built-in replacement, before installation and cabinetry work

Still unknown

What a matched new pair comes to, and how long it takes to arrive, which only the supplier of the model you settle on can tell you.

This column wins when

Both columns show their age, the panels were due for a change anyway, or the failed column needs more work than its cabinet deserves.

Replacing one column raises questions the old one never did

A new column's opening sizes and panel dimensions come from its own installation and design guides, and they need not match the model it replaces. Where they differ, the opening, the fillers or the trim between the columns need rework.

The panels are a second question. A new panel made to the old pattern sits beside fronts that have had years of light and cleaning, and whether it reads as a match is judged with a sample in the kitchen, not from a catalog. None of this can be settled until the new model is chosen and its guide is on the table.

The healthy column belongs in the decision

On the diagnosis visit, look at the working column with the same eye as the failed one: do its doors swing shut and seal, are its gaskets still soft, has its control been reliable, and how clean is its condenser?

A second column in good order makes repairing or replacing one column a comfortable choice. A second column already showing wear is the case for pricing a new pair beside the repair, so the comparison covers the whole wall rather than half of it.

Asked about this situation

Will a new column match the one that is still working?

Nobody can promise that in advance. The new model's installation and design guides give its opening and panel sizes, which decide how it fits, and how its panel looks beside an older front is judged in the kitchen. Sub-Zero Repair Sammamish can put the repair figure in writing first, so the comparison is fair.

Does the second column tend to fail soon after the first?

No honest figure answers that. The two columns run separate sealed systems, so one failing does not make the other fail; what they share is their age and the room they stand in. Sub-Zero Repair Sammamish, (425) 610-8986, can look over the working column on the same visit and report what it finds.
